What to do when there is no wrestling

What do we do as parents when there is no wrestling practice? We all know that it is a challenge to improve skills and conditioning for our kids especially when they really just want to play video games.

A little Jiujitsu

Well, I suggest something that runs counter to what some parents think, and that is having the kids do jiujitsu. The problem that may happen is that when wrestling the kids may want to go to their back. That of course is a problem in wrestling because you lose that way. That has happened to my daughter at tournaments, so yes it can be a problem at first. But, I believe that you get what you expect. I expect them to be able to make the switch in their minds. While this may not be easy, I am aiming at developing their mental prowess and flexibility. This is one more way to do that. While that may hurt their performance short-term on the mat, long-term it will help every area of their lives. That is the ultimate goal isn't? I encourage the parents to apply the discipline they expect in wrestling to be applied in other areas. Why should we not expect our kids to excel in school, music, math, etc? There is a thought out there about putting too much pressure on the kids is awful. The perspective I take is that we can build a Ferrari engine with them, so their idling speed is way faster than the engine of a Yugo. Based on that, if the environment you provide as a parent is loving and supportive while expecting excellence, then what you may get is child that is high performing without the detrimental pressures.
